Each Summer, Bonanza Educational partners with community organizations to present our popular after-school programming in a camp format. This year is no exception. We’d like to invite you to join us for one of our summer camps this year.
Building Bonanza! An All-Day STEM & Creativity Day Camp
Building Bonanza! Science and Creativity is an all-day summer day camp in its 8th annual appearance.
Each day at Camp is 8 hours, and features at least 7 hours of LEGO-based learning, discovery and play, with the last hour of each day divided into two recesses to stretch our legs and, of course, lunch. A typical week is divided into: 30% Stop Motion Animation, 20% LEGO Engineering, 20% LEGO Mindstorms Robotics, 15% Expressing Art with LEGO, and the last 15% on the weekly camp project.
Stop Motion Animation is a method of making movies where you take many pictures of real-life objects and string them together into a motion picture. We’ll teach students the basics of animation and its history, discuss storytelling technique, learn about technology that makes making movies easy, and even a little about copyright rules! We will encourage them to form a team to create, edit, and publish a short animated movie, which we share after camp forever on our Community Creations website. Movies from last year’s camps can be found here.
With LEGO Engineering and LEGO Robotics, the students will be taught basic engineering ideas while building projects including ZIP-line rescue vehicles, rubber-band catapults, arm-extender claws, and hand blenders. We’ll add battery powered motors to explore how gears work and make vehicles that zip around the room. Students in approximately 2nd grade and above will also learn the basics of computer programming with LEGO Mindstorms where they’ll program LEGO robots and build tools for the robots to use.
The students will also partake in a bona-fied “art class” using just LEGO–put the pencils and paint away! We’ll explore ideas such as color, patterns, scale, 2d and 3d dimensional sculpture, and more, in what is both a fun also relaxing daily activity.
Finally, taken everything students have learned into account, midway through camp, we’ll encourage them to lead themselves in a large “camp project”. Camp Projects sometime mean using art scaling techniques to build a “big” sculpture or work together to lay out a large themed collaborative project. We never know what the camp will come up; each week of camp is different!
When not building LEGO, students are offered two 20-minute indoor recess periods (because 7 hours a day of LEGO building is tiring!) and a 20 minute lunch period.
Students are supervised by fingerprinted, background checked instructors who are expert teachers and LEGO builders themselves!
Parents should send students with pack lunch and water bottles; food is not provided. The camp is open every day at 3:45 for parents to visit to see what their children worked on that day, and we encourage students to save a project per day on the “parent’s table”.
We look forward to seeing your kiddo in Camp this Summer!

LEGO Engineers! A 1/2 Day Summer Day Camp
Teach your LEGO bricks some pretty cool tricks in this exciting LEGO engineering camp! Using a mixture of regular and technical LEGO parts, we’ll make exciting moving machines with our LEGO while learning STEM skills including all about the classical machines, circuits, and energy. Students may bring a bottle of water and a snack. There are no take-home projects.

LEGO Engineers! A 1/2 Day Summer Day Camp
LEGO and Minecraft come together in one exciting summer camp! Build LEGO creations inspired by Minecraft and then bring them to life in short movies! Students will spend half their time in camp making stop-motion animated movies with Apple iPads (provided) and the other half of their time in immersive, fun building projects with LEGO. Students may bring a bottle of water and a snack. There are no take-home projects but movies are published online after camp to be shared with family and friends.
